Award Winning Wedding Photography - Phil Salisbury.
So yesterday 08.06.2020 I received an email that brought the biggest smile to my face. For anyone who's a documentary wedding photographer seeing the email from THIS IS REPORTAGE drop into your inbox is a little bit of an overwhelming moment. To put how hard achieving this type of award is let me break a couple of statistics down for you. In Collection 15 they had a record 13,000 entries. From those 13,000, 135 images were selected for single image awards (mine being one of them.) To receive an award three out of five judges must vote for an image. For any documentary wedding photographer wining a THIS IS REPORTAGE award is a HUGE recognition that you are amongst the very best in the world at what you are doing. To say i'm elated is an understatement! Shooting as a Manchester wedding photographer its always an incredible privilidge to shoot at so many incredible venues all over the UK and beyond.
Documentary story telling is what photography is all about for me. Real moments on your wedding day, not staging things, seeing and capturing the true essence of the day as it was is what it should be all about. Being able to revisit those moments that perhaps you didn't even know existed or being taken back to those that you did to relive them is everything reportage story telling is about. That's why this image is just so special to me. Kasha & Jonny's wedding at the The Glass House Staining was a sensational one; so many memorable moments throughout their day, but also so many moments they weren't aware of. I'm always working hard to ensure I tell the story of your wedding the best I can and hearing the outdoor buffet was about to open I made my way outside to see if there was any stories to be told. There can always be moments happening between the moments even sometimes between guests chatting, so people queuing for food can actually turn into some fabulous moments and that's EXACTLY what happened! No sooner had the buffet opened and people starting queueing for the food did this little dog appear from under a fence. It caught my attention out of the corner of my eye. I saw it start to make its way over to the buffet platter on a table (it had obviously smelt just how wonderful the food was) and within a split second it leapt onto the table grabbed the burger in its mouth and bolted. Within that split second I'd seen this moment start to happen and with camera in hand I quite literally dropped to the floor knowing full well this was an amazing story for the bride and groom. At the time all I could think was "This is gold" and with that I captured the little food thief making a dash for it!
I feel so fortunate to be able to do what I do for a living, I want to say a special thank you to all my Brides and Grooms, a special thank you to Kasha & Jonny for having me there to capture this image. Extending that thank you to Alan Law (founder of This Is Reportage) for creating such an amazing community of photographers that help inspire those around them. Congratulations to all the other winners, the standard of work is just fantastic!
